No.
Beginners and experienced anglers can both enjoy our trips. I'm happy to teach fly fishing on our trips and many trips are based on learning a new skill.
We'll discuss your experience before the trip so we can choose suitable water and techniques.
Our trips are always private and are generally designed for small groups. Usually we have 1-4 people at the same time and maximum is 6 people. If you have a bigger group I will take another guide with us.
Age or physical restrictions are not usually a reason to stop fishing in Lapland. We just have to find spots where you don't need to wade in fast water and we can take a foldable toilet seat with us to the wilderness. Every year the oldest client's are more than 80 years old. Let's try to overcome obstacles together.
Absolutely.
Dry fly fishing is one of our main focuses when conditions allow. Grayling usually takes dry flies even in September.
There is no honest way to guarantee a particular size of fish. Many days we manage to land graylings between 35 and 50 cm. In some rivers and lakes there's a possibility to go easily over 50 cm or even over 55 cm.
We aim to fish waters capable of producing excellent grayling.
Equipment can be provided depending on the package. Grayling Guide can give you quality fly fishing gear to use.
Of course.
If you want to bring your own gear I recommend 4-weight and 5-weight fly rods. For sea trout we usually use 6- or 7-weight rods. We'll advise you more on suitable rods, lines, leaders and flies for your particular trip.
Not necessarily.
Usually your package includes waders, so we'll provide quality waders and wading boots. Remember to tell us your size if you want to borrow waders.
That depends on your trip.
We'll recommend the most convenient airport based on your fishing location and itinerary. Usually people fly to Kittilä, which is closest to our base. But it's also possible to fly to Rovaniemi, Alta or Tromso.
You can also arrive by train to Kolari. There's a night train from Helsinki to Kolari a couple of times in a week.
DO YOU PICK PEOPLE UP AT THE AIRPORT?
Airport transfers can be arranged for almost all trips. All the complete fishing packages in our website include airport transportation and your actual fishing guide will be there waiting for you. In other trips there will be an extra charge but nothing like taxi prices.
We'll adapt the fishing plan where possible. If it's possible to change a date we can do that. But sometimes we have to change the destination. For example helicopter flights can be cancelled due to bad weather.
Safety always comes first.
In many cases, yes. And the scenery is enjoyable for both of you.
Tell us what you'd like to do and we'll see what can be arranged. We'll try to arrange a trip where everyone feels good.
Yes. We offer especially multi-day trips.
Multi-day trips are particularly useful if you want to explore different rivers or target several species. Or if you want to experience life in remote areas without phone coverage.
Yes, depending on the itinerary. There's nothing better than spending your night by the river. We can offer you all the camping equipment too. We can use smaller hiking tents or bigger tiipii tents and even proper outdoor beds.
Accommodation can be included or arranged depending on the trip. Other than camping you can choose from modest huts to luxury hotels. All the complete fishing packages in our website include basic accommodation. In other trips there will be an extra charge.
Depending on location and season, trips may target:
Grayling
Brown trout
Arctic char
Sea trout
Whitefish
Atlantic or Baltic salmon
Pink salmon
Perch
Northern pike
Coalfish and cod
Fishing is not completely catch and release unless you want it that way. In many lakes and rivers the fish population can handle us taking some fish for dinner. We always release small ones and usually we release the trophy ones too. For dinner or lunch we try to take a middle sized fish. We can eat fish on our trips, but don't bring fishes back home to the freezer.
Fish, reindeer meat, porridge, toast, rye bread, bacon & eggs, pancakes, cloudberries, you name it! Remember to tell me in advance what you prefer or if you have special needs for food.
Yes, usually it's really safe to drink water from the rivers and lakes in the fell area. The water is really pure. If you have a sensitive stomach and you want to be really careful, you can also use a filter bottle.
We'll look at alternatives where possible.
Because the trips are private, the itinerary can be adapted much more easily than a fixed group tour. In Lapland there's always a place where we can fish.
For international multi-day trips, earlier is better—particularly for the busiest summer dates. The best times are many times booked a year in advance.
Contact us as soon as you know your preferred dates.
Expect change.
Northern summers can be warm, but cold, rain and wind are also possible. Nights can be cold and sometimes below zero Celsius degrees even in summertime.
Pack layers and waterproof clothing.
For winter trips expect cold weather although we won't go to the fell area if it's colder than - 20 Celsius degrees.
This is Lapland.
Yes, they are part of the ecosystem but only on summertime. Usually there are more mosquitoes from the end of June to end of July. But more mosquitoes might also mean more insect life which means surface action. So fly fishing can be spectacular.
I wouldn't be afraid of mosquitoes. You can use a mosquito hat, bug stopper shirt and insect repellent. You'll be fine.
Coverage varies significantly by location. Ín remote areas there are no coverage at all. We can spend days without phones and that can be relaxing. Your guide will always have a satellite messenger in case of emergency.
DOES MY GUIDE SPEAK ENGLISH?
Teemu is a local guide and speaks Finnish and English very well and understands several other languages a little bit. But English and Finnish are the languages for guiding. You can always have a online meeting or phone call with your guide before you even decide to book your trip.
Send me a message.
I'd rather answer your question before the trip than have you arrive unsure about anything.
