Have you ever watched a fish rise to take an insect from the surface and wondered what it would be like to catch one with a fly?
Fly fishing might look complicated at first, but getting started is easier than you think.
Join me for a private fly fishing lesson in Northern Finland, where we'll learn the basics in a relaxed atmosphere and put your new skills into practice on real fishing waters.
From your first cast to choosing the right fly and understanding where fish are feeding, I'll help you discover what makes fly fishing so rewarding.
You don't need any experience or your own equipment. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
Everyone starts with their first cast. Let's make yours a memorable one.
The best way to learn fly fishing is to get out on the water.
We'll begin with the basics, practising casting techniques and getting comfortable with the equipment before moving on to fishing.
Depending on your experience and interests, we'll cover:
How to use a fly rod, reel and fly line
Basic casting techniques and line control
Choosing flies and presenting them naturally
Reading the river and finding promising fishing spots
Dry-fly fishing and other useful techniques
Playing, landing and handling fish responsibly
There's no pressure to learn everything in one day.
We'll progress at your pace, spending more time on the techniques you find interesting or challenging.
And with a little luck, you might catch your first fish on a fly during the lesson.
Northern Lapland is a wonderful place to discover fly fishing.
We can arrange lessons near Muonio, Hetta or Kilpisjärvi, choosing a suitable river or lake according to your location and the conditions.
There are plenty of places where we can practise casting without crowds, then try our new skills in water that holds wild fish.
Grayling are particularly enjoyable fish to pursue with a fly rod. Watching a grayling rise to a dry fly is often the moment that makes people fall in love with fly fishing.
Catching a fish is never guaranteed, but even without one, there's plenty to learn and enjoy.
Fishing experience meets a background in teaching.
I'm Teemu Vehviläinen, founder of Grayling Guide.
I've been fishing for more than 40 years and spent 20 years working as a primary school teacher.
These days, I concentrate only on fishing and guiding, but I still enjoy teaching people new skills.
Whether you've never held a fly rod or have tried casting a few times without much success, I'll help you improve in a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere.
There's no need to worry about making mistakes. We all make them, and they're part of learning.
My aim is to help you feel confident enough to continue fly fishing on your own after the lesson.
You don't need to buy expensive fishing equipment before your first lesson.
I'll provide the waders, fly rods, reels, lines, flies and other necessary fishing equipment.
We'll choose suitable equipment for your experience and the type of fishing we're doing.
If you already have your own fly rod, you're welcome to bring it along. We can practise with your equipment and make sure it's suitable for your needs.
Just remember to bring comfortable outdoor clothing. I'll advise you about any additional clothing or equipment when we plan your lesson.
