Ice fishing in winter

In Lapland there´s usually a thick ice on the lakes from November to May. The scenery in the fell area in winter is simply magnificent. In the fell area you have got a possibility to try ice fishing for grayling, perch, pike white fish or arctic char. We drill holes to the ice and fish through the ice. In shallow areas we can even see the fish taking the bait. It's called sight fishing. In deeper lakes we use sonar systems to spot fishes. If you are visiting Finland in winter you don't want to miss a chance to try ice fishing.

Kilpisjärvi ice fishing for arctic char

In winter many people go to Kilpisjärvi, Enontekiö, which is famous for its huge arctic char. In Kilpisjärvi area there are plenty of fell lakes where to choose. You can target on arctic char, grayling, or white fish. There are also lakes where you find grayling, white fish, trout, perch and pike. You can choose what fish you want to target and we'll choose the lake after that. The scenery in the fell area in winter is amazing.

In December and January sun doesn't rise at all and it's relatively dark all day. It's a really unique experience to have a ice fishing trip at "Kaamos" time as we call it in here. And still you'll have a good chance to catch a huge arctic char. We use led lights on lures under water then. Daily trips during "Kaamos" time last about 5-6 hours and prices start from 500 euros.

From Kilpisjärvi we can also make trips to the fell area. These trips are arranged in March and April and last about 8-10 hours. In the fell area you can enjoy magnificent scenery and sight fishing for arctic char, grayling or whitefish. In spring time sun is shining all day long and it's very enjoyable to spend time in wilderness area. In longer trips you can also order proper meals and your guide will cook you delicious dishes.

Full day trip prices start from 500 euros (in December and January "kaamos") and they last 5-10 hours depending on the season and darkness. We start ice fishing trips from Kilpisjärvi. Prices for longer trips to fell area start from 700 euros.

On a multi-day trip you can live in a cottage or hotel and fish arctic char or other fish species in different lakes every day. You can just book multiple day trips in a row. We can also ride to remote lakes where only guides and some local people are allowed go.
